Materialised
Views
· Materialised views are similar to
external views except that their results are persistently stored in the
database. Materialised views provide fast access to pre-computed information thereby
making them very useful in high performance query processing and data
warehousing.
· The first round research on materialised
views was focused on developing a comprehensive solution and prototype (called
MOVIE) for automatic materialization and incremental maintenance of OQL views.
· The problems being worked upon are:
o To extend MOVIE in various directions:
o To incorporate materialised views into
the monoid comprehension based query optimisation framework of Dr. Leonidas
Fegaras and Dr. David Maier (http://lambda.uta.edu).
· Techniques and technologies used include
ODMG 3.0, lambda-DB and SHORE, the monoid comprehension calculus and algebra,
and benchmarking and empirical performance evaluation.
