The work of the group is based upon the patented invention of Prof. D. Smith: Synthetic Reference Beam Holography. This technique exploits the benefits of holography with the added advantage of NOT requiring direct measurement of phase. This means that any scanner utilizing this technique will be low cost since the expensive vector network analyzer is replaced with a simple diode detector. The mathematical image reconstruction process enable the phase, implicit in the intensity pattern, to be deduced prior to image formation.
