Breast Cancer Detection

Breast Cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in women. X-ray mammography is the most widely used technique for breast cancer detection, but has some limitations. These limitations motivate the search for new methods of breast cancer detection. In this research, our group is currently investigating the use of microwave holography as an alternative / complementary approach to X-rays. This technique is more attractive to patients, as it is non-ionising and breast compression is avoided, resulting in safer and more comfortable examinations. The technique also has the potential to be both sensitive and specific, to detect small tumors, and to be less expensive than methods such as MRI and nuclear medicine.
