The Open Database Project succeeded in its aim of producing a "Proof of Concept" prototype Raquel Database System for public distribution, thanks to funding from "NStar". An Open Source project has now begun to evolve the prototype into a commercial product, and its website is here.

The mission statement of the Open Database Project is as follows:
- To develop:
- A philosophy for a pure relational database model including object classes as data types orthogonal to relations
- An open architecture satisfying the philosophy
- A design for the architecture
- An implementation of the design
- To exploit the developments above through activities such as:
- Providing comprehensive view updating
- Providing sequences and bags as specialised types of relation
- Providing a visual interface for the architecture
- To make the code available as open source software
- To publish documents through the Internet and other means
