Biography

Dr David Wainwright is the Head of the Information, Knowledge and Systems (IKS) Research Group in the School of Computing, Engineering and Information Sciences at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne. His early career as a geophysicist and a drilling engineer in the 1980s involved prospecting for oil in the petroleum exploration industry working in the field across Saudi Arabia and the deserts of North Africa. He was at the front of the new revolution in the use of both off-line and real-time computing and information systems for engineering and business data analysis. This was the early inspiration to undertake SERC funded (now called EPSRC) research into the user adoption of fourth generation languages for rapid piloting and prototyping of computer aided production management systems within the manufacturing sector. Building on this contextual knowledge of both software development and also end-user computing subsequent research and consultancy work has focused on the social, political, organisational and individual factors influencing effective adoption and implementation of information systems. A particular interest has been the development of socially informed methods for the diffusion of information technology innovations with a focus on healthcare and health information systems.

Dr Wainwright consults widely with industry and has facilitated Information Systems and Technology strategies with Vickers Defence Systems and Grainger Property Ltd as well as numerous SMEs in the property, building and construction sectors. Research studies have involved the development and evaluation of organisational and business process modelling to facilitate information systems adoption within hospitals and also the development and adaptation of diffusion of innovation theory for ICT implementation within primary care trusts and General Medical Practice.

Dr Wainwright has been a long serving, co-opted and fully elected Board Member for the UK Academy for Information Systems (UKAIS Regional Co-ordinator) as well as a member of the British Computer Society (BCS) and British Academy of Management (BAM) Directors of Research Network. He is on the editorial board of the established Journal of Enterprise Information Management. He has co-authored over 50 internationally refereed papers and published in high impact and high citation leading international journals such as: the International Journal of Production and Operations Management, the Journal of Information Technology, the International Journal of Production Economics, the British Medical Journal and the International Journal of Information Management, where he has also edited a special issue. He has been the programme chair for the UKAIS Conference (Northumbria 2005 and also Manchester 2007), has been invited many times as a Track and Session Chair at major international IS conferences such as IFIP WG.8.6 and 8.2. and has been a keynote speaker at the IADIS international world wide web internet conference. Dr Wainwright has won an emerald literati award for one of the best papers published in IJOPM and also best paper awards at conferences. Dr Wainwright has received contracts, grants and awards from funding bodies such as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the NHS Service Delivery Organisation and local health authority as well as university and ERDF funded projects. He has many years experience acting as an external examiner for university IS Departments and major Business Schools such as Newcastle University combined with external examination of PhDs at leading (5*) IS departments.
