About 2 M

Mindful Management

2M Group was created in September 2004 by Vince Smith (Operations Director of Draeger Safety UK), Jim Brown (Draeger Safety UK) and Dr Petia Sice (Northumbria University). The Mindful Management Group is a collaborative media between Draeger Safety UK, and Northumbria University with participation from other academic institutions, i.e. the European Business School, Cambridge University, the Open University, University of Birmingham, and managers from a variety of industries.

The 2M group is an enthusiastic enterprise built on values of trust, honesty and mutual respect. It is found on multidisciplinary expertise focusing attention on the study of the nature of social systems and development of the human and organisational capability of mindfulness.

Our objective is too pioneer an innovative collaboration between Industry and Academia that aims at developing the creative potential of both parties.

Focus and Vision

We believe that individuals and organisations should develop a new capacity, the capacity to become aware, to become mindful of their inner and outer world and thus to more fully understand and act to create what they truly desire.

Our vision is: Personal and organisational creativity through developing the capacity of mindfulness.

The focus of our research is the study of the nature of social systems and the conditions of developing mindfulness at personal and organisational level.

2M Research aims at delivering contributions to theory and practice in three organisational domains:  Knowledge, Innovation and Learning (KIL).

The KIL (Knowledge, Innovation and Learning) perspective is outlined below:

Knowledge creation and management. This relates to the study of nature of cognition and the development of practices for enhancing the cognitive capability at individual/organisational level.

•Organisational Innovation, i.e. embodying new knowledge into organisational routines.

•Individual/Organisational Learning. While Knowledge creation is about making sense of reality and organisational Innovation is about implementing knowledge into practice, organisational Learning requires a continuous cycle of knowledge creation and implementation.

Contributing Areas of Human Knowledge

Thus, our objectives are to develop research and contribute to thinking and practice in the following area:

1. The nature of humans and social organisations (theory of autopoiesis, enactive cognitive science)

2. Opportunities and limitations of observation - (second- order cybernetics, second-orderjunderstanding, chaos theory)

3.  Knowing and modelling of social systems (systems thinking, system dynamics, non-linear dynamics, chaos theory, self-organising systems)
4.  Communication and dialogue (David Bohm, Buber, etc.)
5.  Awareness, Creativity and  Personal Mastery (David Bolm, Otto Sharmer, Brian Arthur, etc.)
